Film Noir

A French term (meaning "black film") used to describe the stark, low-budget, black-and-white gangster films produced by American studios in the 40s and 50s. With their pulpy plots and surreal sophistication, these films had a profound impact on the French New Wave Directors of the 60s such as Godard.
