Remembered for her vivid portrayal of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939), Leigh's interpretations of the femme fatale in film were always flavored with a self-reflexive (and often highly comedic) talent for the absurd, as in her wonderful solo jitterbug scene in Stanley Kramer's Ship of Fools (1965), in which she played an embittered (but still highly sexualized) older woman with great aplomb.
